Ash @ The Gov, 2016

Ash still deliver amazing, super-tight set of their Northern Irish brand of pop-rock.
Returning to Australian in 2016 I headed to The Gov in Adelaide to get these shots.

Shot by Kerrie Geier for AMNplify.

About the shoot: Ash are an incredible live band. I was lucky enough to shoot their gig (also at The Gov) a few years ago when they were playing their debut album ‘1977’ in full. So I knew what to expect when it came to the shoot. I wanted to make sure I was up close, and with no barrier at this show that meant staking my claim amongst the crowd. With my wide 16-35mm lens I was able to get right up to bass player Mark Hamilton (one of my favourite performers to shoot) for some distorted close ups of his killer bass moves. This lens is my favourite to use at The Gov when you are right at the stage, because I can get the whole stage in the frame (as you can see below). The colour of the lighting was pretty terrible, and with no backdrop The Gov looks pretty stark – but I was able to capture some action that made up for it. I knew that the lads would take a bow at the end of the gig, so while I had stopped shooting after the first three songs (as is the standard rule when shooting live music) I had stayed down the front of the crowd to enjoy the show and pulled out my camera as they were wrapping up, ready to grab a shot of them thanking the audience.
